How to claim

  1. At once: limit the damage and tell the insurer. A phone call, SMS or email is fine; follow it up in writing.

The day you first tell the insurer counts as the claim date. The insurer sends someone to help and asks for the claim form and all the documents at one time.

  2. Tell the police for a fire, riot, terrorism or crime, or if you suspect one.

Work with the police, the insurer and anyone else looking into the claim, and keep the evidence the claim needs.

  3. Within 7 days, the insurer appoints a surveyor and tells you who it is.

The surveyor has up to 60 working days to report, unless your policy says otherwise. The report says how much you will get, and you are told too.

  4. Within 35 days of telling the insurer, send the full claim. The insurer can give you more time.

What happened and why; the amount, based on value at the time of loss (no profit); proof such as bills, plans, account books and invoices; and any other insurance on the property. Each insurer lists the documents it needs on its website and notice board.

  5. Within 7 days of the surveyor’s report, the insurer pays, or tells you in writing why it won’t.

Claims up to Rs 2,00,000 count as small claims and are paid within 7 days of the documents. The insurer can pay up to 50% of the estimated amount before the final figure is ready.

  6. If you disagree, complain to the Nepal Insurance Authority within 6 months. If you disagree with its decision, appeal to the High Court within 35 days.

A rejected claim not taken to the Authority within 6 months can’t be claimed again.
